The Podcast About Division III Baseball

May 22, 2019

Welcome to Episode 52 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. This is the first podcast in the history of the universe to preview the super regional round of the D-III baseball tournament. We are here to make history, folks. All eight super regionals are discussed, in the following order:

  • UMass-Boston Super Regional
    • UMass-Boston (at 1:57)
      • The Beacons rolled through their own regional; can they do the same in the supers to get to the World Series?
    • New England College (at 5:02)
      • The only 4-seed in the supers, the Pilgrims will look to stay hot against another LEC foe
  • Babson Super Regional
    • Babson (at 7:58)
      • This Beavers team is really damn good at baseball and now they'll get to host with a trip to Cedar Rapids on the line
    • Cortland (at 10:48)
      • Will the Red Dragons' 27th consecutive postseason appearance ultimately feature a 15th appearance in the World Series?
  • Chapman Super Regional
    • Chapman (at 14:48)
      • They had a bit of a scare in the regionals (huuuuuuuuuuuuuge shoutout to Whitman) but the Panthers will now try to ride their pitching staff to its first World Series appearance since 2011
    • Concordia (Texas) (at 19:42)
      • The two-headed behemoth atop this pitching rotation might be all the Tornados need to get to the World Series
  • Birmingham-Southern Super Regional
    • Birmingham-Southern (at 23:18)
      • As good as this program has been, they've yet to make a World Series appearance -- now they'll host at Striplin Field with an excellent opportunity to change that
    • Coe (at 26:10)
      • We try to imagine what this Kohawks team *would* be like in the hypothetical fantasy world where they beat WashU with a go-ahead home run in the 9th inning of the final game #ItWasAllADream #ButActuallyThisTeamIsReallyGood
  • Concordia-Chicago Super Regional
    • Concordia-Chicago (at 34:29)
      • The Cardiac Cougars will try to make things a little less dramatic in the super regional round than they did in the regionals in their roller coaster ride against Baldwin Wallace
    • Webster (at 38:05)
      • The Gorloks are looking very strong after handling the Whitewater regional without too many speedbumps -- how far can their pitching and defense take them?
  • Heidelberg Super Regional
    • Heidelberg (at 42:20)
      • The Student Princes swept what may have been the toughest regional and will now get to host their regional rival instead of heading back out on the road
    • Wooster (at 45:20)
      • The Fighting Scots battled back after dropping their first regional game and are now starting to fire on all cylinders at the right time
  • Johns Hopkins Super Regional
    • Johns Hopkins (at 48:56)
      • No team is as comfortable at home as this Blue Jays squad, who haven't been to the World Series since 2010
    • Shenandoah (at 52:37)
      • The Hornets have been super hot in the second half, winning the ODAC tourney and then winning four straight to win the Kean regional -- can the lineup keep up with the Hopkins Home Run Machine?
  • Misericordia Super Regional
    • Misericordia (at 55:19)
      • Fresh off a dynamite sweep of Christopher Newport in the regional round, the Cougars appear more than eager to return to the World Series for the second year in a row...
    • Washington & Jefferson (at 58:08)
      • ...but the Presidents are no strangers to the World Series either, and just swept what looked like one of the tougher regionals without much trouble. Don't sleep on these guys.
  • OUR PICKS FOR ALL EIGHT SUPER REGIONALS which are sure to be extremely wrong because predicting this insane level of baseball is stupid and impossible but we did it anyway (at 1:01:00)

...then we say goodbye. Thanks for listening!
